Patio: An Outdoor Extension Of Your Home

by Daniel Roshard

As one of the most visited areas of any home that has one, a patio is a place to entertain, enjoy the company of friends and family and in general live. It is a place where people get together for various reasons and have fun. We eat, drink and play in this area of our homes. As such a widely used area of the house, wouldn't it be nice to not have to worry about inclement weather or the hot sun?

Patios are great addition to any house, especially to people who enjoy the outdoors. A great solution to bad weather is deck umbrellas. these are placed on top of the patio and can slide in or out to provide protection from the rain or other falling objects. However one down side to them is that one windy days they may not give you a reliable protection and you may get wet.

Outdoor covers are the ideal answer for people who love to spend time outside. These covers come in a variety of types and materials and will be a welcome addition to your home. Covering a patio will not only allow people to be outside while avoiding the harsh extremes of weather, but will keep items in that area safe from the weather as well.

Make sure that you're abiding by all zoning laws if you're going shopping for an outdoor cover to add to your home. To do this, check your local permit office. It would be a shame if you had to take something down that violated city code right after you put a lot of money into it.

The next thing that you should look at is what kind of material do you want the cover to be made of. Some materials are quite expensive and others are cheaper. Looking into things like a sunroom are also options to those who want to enjoy the outdoors without the risk of rain and sunburn. A material such as latticework is cheaper, and is a simple and elegant solution, but will give you little protection from the elements.

Patio covers can be created in many different styles and with different materials. Some people opt for a screened area for entertaining, which sometimes includes a pool. You can actually have an enclosed area with solid walls but this feels closed in and you can't really enjoy the outdoors. Clear covers seem like a good choice but offer no protection from rain or falling twigs. Pick the right patio cover for your situation and it will enhance your home.

A patio is a popular place to spend time in any home. Deck umbrellas can help keep you cool when you are outside. They do not provide protection from the weather. An outdoor awning can help keep snow and rain off of this outdoor living space. It is important to make sure you are following all laws and code when building on to your home. Another important decision to make is choosing what kind of material to use for your outdoor covers. A 'cage' is another solution to this problem. It allows light in but protects you from rain and falling objects.
