Collectibles - History Of Pepsi Vending Machines
Old bottles from soda drinks like Pepsi and Mountain Dew are great collectibles. With lots of people collecting as a hobby and many more collecting them to sell and it's not just the bottles that are of interest as even the vending machines are becoming popular to collectors.
Vending machine collecting is of interest to some people. The first vending machines were not machines at all but self-service bins with a coin cup. Later, automated vending machines that dispensed a soda bottle when the coin was dropped into a slot could be found. A paramount breakthrough was the vending machines that actually made change.
It is difficult to find a Pepsi vending machine because few were made in the past. Pepsi made larger bottles than their competitors and these did not fit in standard vending machines. Also, custom vending machines for large bottles was not an option for Pepsi.
This forced the vending machine makers to make different machines for different bottles and this caused an increase in costs. It is very difficult to find a Pepsi machine because few were made and even fewer survived. Since Pepsi management was focused on low cost, they didn't jump at the opportunities regarding vending machines for their bottles.
Electronic machines with small in-built computers came next. The computers collected sales and other data and will soon become collectibles in the near future. Next will probably be machines whereby soda will be dispensed if you swipe your card. Some of the later models dispense cans and even 20 ounce bottles of soda. These later machines are not considered collectibles yet, but are still often purchased to enhance the decor inside homes.
Working models of the hard to find machines that dispense a fountain style drink in a cup is a favorite type of collectible. Many of the older models were quite small and easily placed on a table or counter. Although these machines are space saving many collectors prefer the larger ones and will make room for them.
